Tin Plated Steel

Tin-plated steel is a metal material widely used in the food and packaging industries. It combines the strength of steel with the corrosion resistance and weldability of tin. Tin-plated cold-rolled annealed steel has a beautiful luster. Wanzhi Steel specializes in the production of tin-plated steel sheets, coils, and strips of different widths, and provides machining services. The length and thickness can be customized. If you have special requirements, please send them to us.

What is tin-plated steel?

It is made from a cold rolled steel base that is coated with a thin layer of tin (usually 0.4-2.0 microns per side) by electroplating or hot dip coating. Tin plated steel is used to make a variety of parts, including deep drawn oil filter housings, electronic shielding covers and baking trays. The tin layer on the surface acts as a barrier to protect the steel base from water and air, thus extending the service life of the steel. Tin plating makes it ideal for applications that require rust resistance, electrical conductivity and food safety requirements.

Performance characteristics

  • Corrosion resistance: The tin coating can isolate the steel from direct contact with oxygen and moisture in the air, thereby slowing down the corrosion rate of the steel.
  • Aesthetics: The tin coating has a silvery-white luster, is simple and elegant, enhances the aesthetics of the steel, and blends well with the environment.
  • Weldability: The tin coating has good weldability, which is convenient for subsequent welding processing, and its weldability is better than that of galvanized steel.
  • Formability and ductility: It can be stamped, bent and deep drawn to make tinned patterned plates and galvanized perforated plates.
  • Hardness: Tinned steel also has a certain hardness, toughness and wear resistance, which can meet the use requirements of different fields, and the conductive surface can be used for electrical components.
  • Non-toxic and food-safe: It complies with FDA and EU food contact regulations, so it can be directly used in the food industry.
  • Durability: Although the price is slightly higher than that of galvanized steel, the tin protective layer provides excellent rust resistance, making its service life higher than that of galvanized steel.

What is tin plating used for?

  • Food and beverage packaging: soup cans, milk powder, coffee cans, soda cans, tuna cans, vegetable cans, crown caps, aerosol bottles, the tin layer on their surface not only prevents rust, but also has non-toxic and harmless properties.
  • Electronic and electrical components: battery housings, shielding cans (EMI/RFI protection in circuit boards), connectors, and terminals. Tin-plated steel has good conductivity and electromagnetic shielding properties.
  • Automotive and industrial parts: fuel tanks and filters, washers and gaskets, HVAC components. Consumer goods and hardware.
  • Kitchenware: baking trays, cookie cutters, flower boxes, barbecue paper, its corrosion resistance can ensure that the utensils are not easily rusted and damaged during storage and use.
  • Decorations: signs, gift cans, nails, screws and fasteners benefit from its rust resistance. It can be beautifully designed with patterns through printing and other processes, showing a rich variety of colors and textures.

Is tin plated steel safe to use?

Tin Plating is used extensively in the food and electronic industries. It is safe and non-toxic, offers first-rate corrosion resistance, and is pliable with low porosity.

Production of tinplate

Production steps

  • Selection of steel: select suitable steel as the substrate and perform pretreatment such as cleaning and rust removal.
  • Tin plating: Similar to the galvanizing process, put the cleaned steel sheet into the tinning tank, and form a layer of tin on the surface of the steel by electroplating or hot-dip plating. This step can control the thickness of the coating. You can contact Wanzhi Steel to customize the coating.
  • Post-processing: Cool, solidify, clean, trim, and other post-processing steps of the tin-plated steel to ensure the uniformity and integrity of the tin coating.

What is the difference between tinplate and TFS?

TFS is an electrolytic chrome-plated steel sheet with excellent paintability and paint adhesion. Tinplate (ETP) is a tin-plated thin steel sheet with excellent weldability and corrosion resistance. The coating composition of the two is different, so the characteristics are also different.

Why Tin Plating?

  • Tin is a soft, silver-white metal that’s also very flexible. Due to this higher flexibility, tin can be molded and stretched in a wide variety of shapes, all the while remaining whole and without cracking.
  • What’s more, tin is also non-toxic, corrosion-resistant, and highly conductive.
  • Tin plating can be applied to several different materials, like regular steel, stainless steel, copper, brass, aluminum, and zinc die cast.
  • Additionally, tin is also used by industrial manufacturers as it provides several significant benefits.

When you take all of these attributes and applications into account, it becomes clear why tin plating is very prevalent in industries like electronics, shipping, hardware, solar, and even food processing.

Precautions for tin-plated steel

1. When using tin-plated steel, care should be taken to avoid direct contact with corrosive substances such as strong acids and strong alkalis to avoid damaging the tin-plated layer.

2. The welding process of tin-plated steel should follow the corresponding welding process specifications to ensure the welding quality and the integrity of the tin-plated layer.

3. When cleaning tin-plated steel plates, do not use irritating cleaning agents, and use mild cleaning agents.

4. In addition to not being able to contact strong acids and alkalis, be careful not to come into direct contact with other metals in a humid environment.
