Galvanized steel has a zinc coating that provides sacrificial anodic protection, meaning the zinc corrodes first to protect the underlying steel. Galvalume, on the other hand, is coated with an alloy of 55% aluminum, 43.5% zinc, and traces of silicone. Its honeycomb-like microstructure encapsulates zinc within aluminum, which reduces its cathodic protection efficiency compared to galvanized steel. As a result, the cut edges of Galvalume are more prone to corrosion and should be sealed with anti-rust paint.
Overall, Galvalume steel offers greater durability and typically lasts twice as long as Gi steel, making it suitable for applications requiring long service life. However, it is also more expensive. Galvanized steel remains a cost-effective alternative with reliable performance, ideal for those prioritizing economy. Your choice should depend on specific needs: choose galvanized for lower cost and good protection, or opt for Galvalume for extended longevity despite higher initial investment.
